The Plaster Cast Gallery (Gipsoteca) at the Liceo Artistico at Porta Romana in Florence contains the most interesting collection of plaster casts in Italy, in particular of casts of the Tuscan Renaissance art. The most significant group comes from the acquisition of 1922 of the Oronzio Lelli’s collection, made by the then director Mario Salvini.

The Florentine business by the same name had received the task from the “Direzione Generale delle Antichità e Belle Arti” to reproduce sculptures from the Antiquities and the Renaissance, so in a short period of time it had succeeded in acquiring an exceptionally interesting collection, consisting of molds, forms and models obtained directly from the originals.
With this first group Prof. Salvini started the Museum of Casts, assisted in organizing the plaster casts by prof. Filippo Tossi, superintendent of the Florence Galleries, and in preserving this plaster cast gallery by Luigi Lelli, the son of the collection’s founder and he himself a cast maker. The Royal Institute of Art already owned a number of selected molds to be used for the instructional exercises of the students coming from the previous “Scuola d’Intaglio” (carving school).
The collection of plaster casts had the purpose of encouraging the study of the “ornato italiano” (the Italian ornate style) and it is because of these educational indications that the plaster cast gallery owns notable reproductions of decorative Renaissance architectural and plastic components. Later on, some important casts were transferred here: from the Bargello the Donatello’s Gattamelata and from the Galleria dell’Accademia “Alexander taming Bucephalus”. Finally the cast of David from the Lorraine epoch, realized by Clemente Papi, was placed in the ideal apse of the Riding School of the ex-Royal Stables.
