The Pisan Hills and the Valdera form a geographical area in central Tuscany characterized by a rolling landscape, where agricultural activity blends harmoniously with a historical heritage of Etruscan and medieval origin. In Lari, the Castello dei Vicari stands at the center of the village and for about four centuries administered roughly a third of the Pisan province on behalf of Florence. Capannoli is home to the splendid Villa Bourbon del Monte-Baciocchi, a complex in late Baroque and Neoclassical style. It stands on the foundations of an ancient castle documented as early as 843, but owes its current appearance to a major renovation carried out in the mid-18th century at the request of Senator Alessandro Orazio Pucci. Today it houses a Zoological Museum and an Archaeological Documentation Center. Lajatico, positioned on a rocky spur, has become a cultural reference point; the Teatro del Silenzio combines rural character with scenic spectacle and is a destination for art enthusiasts.

The economy of this territory is based on a mixed system. Alongside specialized agriculture, there are industrial and artisanal districts of national importance. Mechanical engineering and design are strongly rooted in Pontedera, a key hub for motor production and industrial design. Wood manufacturing is traditionally associated with Cascina and Ponsacco.
