LEATHER PAPER TEXTILE

Profilo

In the San Frediano district of Florence, Lapo Giannini and Michiko Kuwata own a workshop specialising in artistic bookbinding, the creation of leather, paper and linen items and the restoration of antique paper objects and books. Although they come from different cultures, they share a common passion for this work, experimenting with modern solutions. Lapo Giannini, born in Florence in 1972, is the sixth generation of Florence's oldest family of artistic bookbinders. After graduating from the Art College of his hometown, he perfected his technical experience in the family business, before going on to set up his own company. He has recently set up this workshop together with Michiko Kuwata where, with great enthusiasm, they make new designs and experiment using new materials, never forgetting the culture, style and experience of the past. Michiko Kuwata was born in Tokyo and lives in Florence. After completing her secondary education in the USA and her degree in Japan, she moved to France to study Art History at the Sorbonne in Paris. After that she moved to Florence where, in 2004, she completed a course in the restoration of paintings on canvas and board, at the Florence Art and Restoration College. She did internships in the restoration workshop of the National Central Library of Florence and other private workshops. After winning her diploma, she began her career as restorer of antique paper objects and books working in a Florentine studio. In another workshop of Florence dealing in artistic bookbinding and leather and paper objects, she learned techniques of working with and decorating leather. In 2008 she set up her own business in the restoration and artistic bookbinding field.
