Florence, cradle of artistic craftsmanship
Florence, cradle of the Renaissance and capital of beauty, is also one of the symbolic places of Italian artistic craftsmanship. Since the Middle Ages, the city has hosted guilds and workshops that gave life to extraordinary manual traditions, still alive and thriving today in every corner of the historic center and the province.
Among the best-known excellences stands out without a doubt leatherworking. Florence is famous for the production of bags, jackets, wallets, and accessories made with fine leathers and finished by hand. The Santa Croce district and the Chianti hills are home to workshops that combine contemporary design with traditional expertise.
Another distinctive art is Florentine goldsmithing, concentrated mainly in the area of the Ponte Vecchio. Here, master goldsmiths create jewelry of the highest quality, inspired by classical or completely innovative motifs, working gold and stones with ancient techniques such as repoussé and chasing.
Florence also boasts a historic tradition in woodworking and carving. Frames, furniture, and art objects are still produced according to the standards of the ancient Renaissance workshops. The Florentine inlays and hardstone mosaics, created with incredible precision, represent another jewel in the crown of local craftsmanship.
Also highly valued is the production of hand-decorated paper and artisanal bookbinding, practices rooted in the world of the scribes and revived today in notebooks, albums, and artistic prints of rare beauty.
