The Museum of Textiles in Prato is considered the most dynamic permanent cultural institution devoted to the study, the preservation and promotion of ancient and contemporary textiles and fashion. It was born in 1975 inside the Istituto Tecnico Superiore Tullio Buzzi (a high-school that for over a century has been training the technicians and chemists employed in the local textile industry) as an educational structure supporting the training. In 2003 it moved to a new location inside the ex-Fabbrica Campolmi, an 18th and 19th century textile-industrial archeology building, restored by the City administration and turned into a cultural center of which the museum occupies about 3000 sq. meters. The collection includes thousands of textiles from Italy, Europe and some samples also from other parts of the world. The oldest textiles come from pre-Colombian burial sites and from Christian Coptic Egypt. The collection of Renaissance Italian textiles is one of the most important in the world. The productions from Prato are represented by machineries and textile samples spanning from the second half of the 19th Century to our times. The presence in the collections on exhibit of contemporary textiles is a very unique element of this museum. Next to the permanent exhibition the museum presents a program of temporary shows relating to contemporary fashion, a testimony to the commitment of the Ente towards the study and the promotion of Made in Italy with a cultural point of view. opening days and hours Monday: closed, Tuesday-Thursday: 10AM.3PM; Friday-Saturday 10AM-7PM; Sunday 3PM-7PM - Tickets Full €6; reduced €4; groups €5 additional services Guided tour available by reservation in Italian (60€ in addition to the price of admission) and in English (80€ in addition to the price of admission) - Reservations For information and reservations please contact: didattica@museodeltessuto.it
