Founded in 1762, the Etruscan Museum Guarnacci is amongst the oldest public museums in Europe. Opened with the donation made by abbot Mario Guarnacci to the city of Volterra, the museum includes an exceptional archeological collection. Together with its rich collection of archeological finds, Guarnacci left also his impressive collection of over fifty thousand volumes, therefore avoiding its scattering and enriching the town of Volterra. To this day, the museum is one of the most interesting in Tuscany to retrace the steps of the development of the area and its urban developments.
